The Outsiders Newcastle are proud to unveil a new body of work by Scottish artist Sarah Muirhead. Sarah’s paintings visualise the maxim ‘people are stupid, but a person is smart.’ Her refreshing and appealing figurative work grants compassion, complexity and capability to the much-maligned modern male. Men it’s easy to write off as unshaven tattoed ne’er-do-wells become sympathetic small town heroes, and perceived threats turn into disarming confidantes. Employing biro, brand names and band T-shirts, Sarah’s works are topical and democratic, instantly resonating with the vox populi she seeks to challenge.
“Transient connections between strangers are fleeting and largely unrecorded, but I hope to catch some of that sense of inexplicable connection,” says Sarah of her humanitarian works. “These connections can be unexpectedly revealing and touching, because they’re unintended in a culture where we tend to be suspicious of the unfamiliar.”
